AARP Driver Safety – Smart Driver Course

Thursday, June 29th from 9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. (please arrive by 8:45 a.m.)

The AARP Smart Driver™ course, is a classroom based refresher course for drivers age 50 and older.  Auto insurance companies in most states provide a multi-year discount after showing proof of completing the course.  Consult your auto insurance company on discounts available to you.

Cost: $20 AARP Members (bring your AARP Card)  or  $25 AARP Non-Members

Pay directly to AARP by check or exact cash on the day of the class.

AARP Smart DriverTEK

Wonder what all those warning lights, beeps and alerts mean when in your vehicle?

Smart DriverTEK is a free, 1½ hour, AARP program which offers a step-by-step guide of how these safety technologies work and how they can benefit drivers through engaging video segments and informative discussion.  As a result of attending this program, you will become more up-to-date on available safety technologies in vehicles and how to use them effectively to help you drive more safely.

You must sign up to attend this program.  Sign up at Reception ~ Space is Limited.

 

Trip: Captain Scott’s Lobster Dock

Join us for lunch at Captain Scott’s Lobster Dock in New London.  This casual, outdoor restaurant is a local favorite for seafood lovers!  They offer seafood dinners, lobster rolls, chowder, salads, hamburgers, chicken sandwiches and more!  Have room for dessert?  Captain Scott’s also sells ice cream and sundaes!  Located right

on the water, Captain Scott’s offers beautiful views of Shaw’s Cove Marina while enjoying your lunch.

(Please note: Dining is on outdoor picnic tables with a covered seating area available).

Cost: $2 for transportation (Senior Center bus).  Lunch is on your own.

Trip to Boston Harbor for a lunch cruise

with shopping at Farneuil Hall & Quincy Market

Enjoy a wonderful afternoon on Boston Harbor for an afternoon of distinctive dining and incredible views aboard Spirit of Boston, a 192ft luxury yacht during this 2 hour lunch cruise.  Elegant and impressive, this exquisite ship is a sophisticated way to see Boston Harbor from the water.

The scenic route departs from Commonwealth Pier and cruises past notable sights including the USS Constitution, Zakim Bunker Hill Memorial Bridge and Inner Boston Harbor Islands.  View the Boston city skyline from the massive windows surrounding the three climate-controlled interior dining decks or take in the stunning panoramic views from two exterior observation decks.

Listen to onboard musical entertainment while enjoying your incredible buffet lunch.  Buffet will be open during the entire cruise and includes multiple salads, chicken, salmon, pork, pasta, selection of vegetables, fresh bread, a signature dessert station, and drinks.  (menu available upon request)

After the cruise, a short ride brings us to Faneuil Hall Marketplace and Quincy Market.  You will be given time on your own to explore the many shops, learn the history of the area, and enjoy the day!

COST: $120 per person includes charter coach transportation and Spirit of Boston Buffet Cruise.

Blithewold Mansion & Gardens Trip

Trip to Blithewold Mansion & Gardens

with lunch at Blithewold and shopping in Newport

on Thursday, July 20th

 

Located on Narragansett Bay, Blithewold is the 33-acre summer estate of the Van Wickle family.  Rebuilt in 1906 after a fire, the 45-room mansion is filled with family heirlooms and authentic furnishings.  Numerous breathtaking gardens, spread throughout the property, contain an exceptional collection of plants, trees, and whimsical stonework reflecting a vision that is romantic, fresh, and inspiring.

Your enjoyable day starts with a guided tour of Blithewold Mansion and Gardens.  Your guide will take you through the mansion while telling the history of the Van Wickle family who placed great emphasis on the gardens and landscape.  You will also visit each of the ten gardens, the Bamboo Grove, the Summerhouse and the Lord and Burnham greenhouse complex.

After the guided tour, enjoy a freshly prepared buffet style luncheon with an assortment of sandwiches, pasta salad, chips, dessert, and drinks which will be served on the mansion’s terrace overlooking the expansive lawn and Narragansett Bay.  Relax and enjoy yourself!  After lunch, you will have time on your own to visit the gift shop, revisit the gardens to take pictures or explore the mansion once more.

Following our visit to Blithewold, a short drive will bring us to Newport.  You will be dropped off at the Newport Visitor Center to enjoy time on your own for shopping, a late afternoon snack or just enjoying the beautiful views that Newport has to offer.  A great way to end your wonderful day!

Quilt Raffle

A beautiful quilt in various shades of greens, pinks, purples, browns and off-white is being raffled to benefit future programs and classes.

This amazing quilt was made by our very talented Senior Center Quilting Group.

Quilt size is approximately 67” x 67”

Tickets are 3 for $1, available at reception.

Last day to purchase tickets is Friday, June 16th

You do not have to be present to win!

 

Membership Renewal

Yearly Membership runs from July 1st – June 30th

 

You need to be a registered Member of the Senior Center to take part in any activity, class, program or utilize any room in the Senior Center.  This includes using our Hairdresser, Massage Therapy and transportation services.  If you have any questions, please call us (860) 889-5960.

 

In-Town Membership (Norwich Residents) is a suggested $25.00 per year

Out-of-Town Membership is $40.00 per year

Pickleball Courts Update

The Senior Center Pickleball court construction is well underway.  The courts are being built using a very generous grant from the Edward and Mary Lord Foundation as well as Neighborhood Revitalization ARPA Funds.  The courts should be ready for use by mid-June.

 

Hartford Healthcare Mobile Health Hub

Tuesday, June 6th from 10:00am-2:00pm

 

Hartford HealthCare will be here offering a Mobile Health Hub.  The Health Hub will include:

  • Medical Health Screenings: Blood Pressure, Blood Sugar, Urinalysis
  • Lab Tests: Cholesterol, Hepatitis C, Hemoglobin, HIV, A1c, Electrolytes, Liver & Kidney Function
  • Vaccines: Shingles, Hepatitis B, dTap, COVID Booster, Polio, MMR, Meningitis
  • Consultations with Medical Providers, Referrals, Follow-Up Care and Community Resources
  • Urgent Care Needs: Common Cold, Flu, Stomach Aches, Ear Aches

 

Plant Your Own Herb Garden

Monday, June 19th at 1:30pm

 

Cost: $20 (due at sign up)

 

During this class, create your own container Herb Garden to take home and enjoy!  All materials will be supplied.  Garden consultant Jan Mallett will give you tips on what to plant, how to plant, and also provide suggestions on how to use your homegrown herbs.  Limited spots available.

 

Jan Mallett has over 50 years of practical experience growing herbs, vegetables, and flowers.  Jan has attained her Master Gardener certification, and recently earned her certification from Gardenary.  She is working now as a Garden Business Coach in the Greater Norwich area.  www.jan-yourgardenguru.com
