Trip: The Big E

Join us on Opening Day at The Big E for a day full of fun! 

This is the 106th year of The Big E.  The Big E is the largest fair in New England with lots of food, fun and great entertainment such as – the Avenue of States, musical entertainment, the Marti Gras Parade, agricultural and livestock exhibits, Clydesdales, plus an array of exhibits, rides, shopping, crafts, entertainment and TONS of foods.  Don’t forget to try The Big E Cream Puff or The Big Éclair!

Opening Day is also Military Appreciation Day!  Active Military and Veterans get free admission to the fair with a Veteran or Military ID.  Representatives from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs from across New England will be stationed along the Avenue of States to answer questions and provide information on both national and state Veteran resources.  A great day to visit!

COST: $53 per person – Includes charter bus transportation and The Big E admission fee. $43 Active Military and Veterans – Includes transportation.  Free admission with Military ID.

Craft Classes

Fridays, September 2nd & 16th at 10:00am

 

Make easy, seasonal crafts to take home and enjoy!  These fun craft classes are good for beginners but all are welcome to join.

Class offered on the 1st & 3rd Friday of the month.

This class is free for Senior Center Members and led by our very crafty volunteer Joyce.

Class size is limited and you need to sign up in advance for each class.

American Flag Retirement Drop Box

Torn or tattered American Flags can be “retired” in the Flag Retirement Drop Box located on the first floor of Norwich City Hall, 100 BroadwayFlags left in the box will be properly taken out of service.  American Flags should never be thrown in the garbage.

Can’t make it to Norwich City Hall?  Drop off your worn flag at Rose City Senior Center and we will bring it to City Hall for you and place it in the box for proper disposal

Book Discussion with Author Karen Warfield

Join local author Karen Warfield as she discusses her book White Gloves.

Set in Norwich, CT in the 1860’s, White Gloves is an historical fiction novel with themes of mystery, intrigue, deception, and redemption.  Follow the story of Edwina Wojneck, a poor girl living with her family who always felt there was more to life than washing clothes and being belittled by her Mummy.

After her glamorous Aunt Vi gives her a taste of the finer things in life, Edwina is whisked off to a new “station” – being a maid in Rochurst Manor.  While there Edwina learns of the strange and disturbing past of Master Rochurst, and the tragic present circumstances of the ladies of the house!

AARP Smart Driver Course

Thursday, September 15th from 9:00am-1:00pm 

(please arrive by 8:45)

 

The AARP Smart Driver™ course, is a classroom based refresher course for drivers age 50 and older.  This 4 hour, in-person class will give you useful information to help keep you safe on the roads. You could even save money on your insurance!  Auto insurance companies in most states provide a multi-year discount after showing proof of completing the course.  Please consult your auto insurance company about the discounts available to you from taking this class. 

Cost: $20 AARP Members   /   $25 AARP Non-Members

Pay directly to AARP by check or cash on the day of the class

Drop off your items that need to be sharpened to the reception desk by Friday, October 7th.

Be sure to have your items wrapped in newspaper and safely stored in a plastic bag, with your name, phone number and correct payment included.
