Household Hazardous Waste Collection & Paper Shredding

Norwich Public Works – 50 Clinton Ave.

Saturday, June 15th from 9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.

The Southeastern Connecticut Regional Resource Recovery Authority (SCRRRA) will be at Norwich Public Works in June to collect household hazardous waste and offer confidential paper shredding.

Items that will be collected include: latex & oil paint, stains & varnish, paint thinner, oven cleaner, kerosene, old gasoline, light bulbs, home batteries, insecticides, fungicides, pool chemicals and more!

Alzheimer’s Association in Your Community

Tuesday, June 4th at 1:00 p.m.

Meet the Connecticut Chapter team that supports our efforts in Eastern Connecticut!

Join us for this informative, 30-minute presentation given by MaryLou Gannotti of the Alzheimer’s Association, Eastern CT Chapter.  The presentation will cover the mission of the Alzheimer’s Association and the resources they provide, followed by a community discussion on how they can better engage and support the local community in the fight to end this disease.

The chapter is also seeking volunteers to be trained to deliver education programming, facilitate support groups, and assist with general outreach.  Together, we can help enhance care for those facing Alzheimer’s and dementia in Eastern CT and beyond.

Recovery Support Group

Wednesday, June 19th at 1:00 p.m.

If you or a loved one has been affected by substance abuse/recovery, please join us. 

These meetings are based on the idea that there are great benefits in bringing individuals together from various pathways of recovery to share and learn from one another. Join Nurse Barbara as she leads this monthly group discussion and gives support.  Meetings are open to any senior in recovery along with seniors who have a loved one struggling with substance abuse or impacted by addiction.

Group meetings will start in June and will meet on the 3rd Wednesday of the month at 1:00 p.m.

Healthy Habits

Friday, June 28th at  10:00 a.m.

This new monthly group will discuss a different health related topic each month. 

Join Nurse Barbara as she provides helpful information, education, and leads a group discussion on ways to form and maintain Healthy Habits.  Group meets on the last Friday of the month at 10:00 a.m.

Community Health Nurse

Barbara Boiselle LPN of Harford Healthcare Community Health provides preventative screenings, disease specific education, medication education, and care coordination to Norwich seniors (age 55 and older).  Barbara is at Rose City Senior Center on Mondays and Thursdays and in the community at various Norwich senior housing locations on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.

Barbara is focused on screenings, education, and referrals only, and will not provide any active treatment.  She will record vitals and can provide testing as needed.  Barbara can also help with scheduling physician appointments, as well as medication refills and concerns.

Beginner Pickleball Lessons

Interested in learning how to play Pickleball?  Now is your chance!

Beginner Pickleball lessons will be available to Senior Center members this Summer! 

You must sign up if you are interested.  Class will be held on the outdoor Pickleball courts.  Paddles available to borrow or bring your own.  Class will tentatively be held on Mondays.  Start date TBD.

Lessons are for those who have never played Pickleball and want to learn the basics of the game

AARP Smart DriverTEK Class

Thursdays: June 20th or October 17th

10:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m (please arrive by 10:15 a.m.)

Wonder what all those warning lights, beeps and alerts mean when in your vehicle?

Smart DriverTEK is a free, 1½ hour, AARP program which offers a step-by-step guide of how these safety technologies work and how they can benefit drivers through engaging video segments and informative discussion.  As a result of attending this program, you will become more up-to-date on available safety technologies in vehicles and how to use them effectively to help you drive more safely.

AARP Driver Safety – Smart Driver Course

Thursdays: August 22th or October 24th

9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. (please arrive by 8:45 a.m.)

The AARP Smart Driver™ course, is a classroom based refresher course for drivers age 50 and older.  Auto insurance companies in most states provide a multi-year discount after showing proof of completing the course.  Consult your auto insurance company on discounts available to you.

Cost: $20 AARP Members (bring your AARP Card)      $25 AARP Non-Members

Pay directly to AARP by check or exact cash on the day of the class.

Craft Class: Bee Watering Station

Wednesday, June 26th at 10:00 a.m.

Sign up starting June 6th

Bees need water, too!  Not only do bees drink water, but they also use it for various other reasons, including cooling their hives and producing honey.  Senior Center member Beryl Fishbone will be leading this craft class to create a bee-safe outdoor watering station.  All materials will be provided.

This class is free to Senior Center members.  Limited spots are available.
