“It’s My Party!” Concert

Golden Oldies and Favorites

Tuesday, June 18th at 1:30 p.m.

The Golden Nuggets Glee Club will be presenting their Spring concert It’s My Party! Golden Oldies and Favorites.  They will be performing songs that members of the Golden Nuggets (and their parents!) grew up listening to ~ including a selection of golden oldies and favorite songs (remember that song about Johnny leaving the party with Judy?).  They will also share a patriotic song medley that we’re sure that you will recognize and enjoy!  This concert is sure to bring back memories for many!

This event is free.  Cookies and drinks will be served.

June Boston Trips

COST: $40 per person includes charter bus transportation.

Trip: Captain Scott’s Lobster Dock

Join us for lunch at Captain Scott’s Lobster Dock in New London.  This casual, outdoor restaurant is a local favorite for seafood lovers!  They offer seafood dinners, lobster rolls, chowder, salads, hamburgers, chicken sandwiches and more!  Have room for dessert?  Captain Scott’s also sells ice cream!  Located right

on the water, Captain Scott’s offers beautiful views of Shaw’s Cove Marina while enjoying your lunch.

(Please note: Dining is on outdoor picnic tables with a covered seating area available).

Cost: $2 for transportation (Senior Center bus).  Lunch is on your own.

Bus leaves the Senior Center at 11:00 a.m. and returns approx. 1:45 p.m.

Start with a delicious, all you can eat, buffet lunch featuring a large selection of freshly prepared food.  After lunch, enjoy the hilarious performance of Nunsense – A Musical!  Following the show, return to your seat in the dining room for dessert, drinks and a fun-filled Cabaret Show!

Nunsense – A Musical! ~ A hilarious musical comedy about the misadventures of five nuns trying to manage a fundraiser.  Sadly, the rest of the sisterhood died from botulism after eating vichyssoise prepared by Sister Julia (Child of God).  Thus, the remaining nuns – befuddled Sister Mary Amnesia; ballet-loving Sister Leo; street-wise Sister Robert Anne; the Mother Superior Sister Regina, and (mistress of the novices) Sister Mary Hubert – decide the best way to raise the money to bury their dearly departed is to stage a talent show ~featuring their own “talents”!

COST: $99 per person includes charter coach bus transportation, fabulous buffet lunch, matinee performance of Nunsense – A Musical!, and Cabaret Show.  Driver tip is not included.

Housing Support Group

3rd Tuesday of the Month from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m.  

Noreen Zupnik, Housing Counselor from New London Homeless Hospitality Center – Housing Resource Center will be at Rose City Senior Center the 3rd Tuesday of every month to answer questions, listen to your concerns, and help with your complaints on your current housing situation.

The goal is to ensure ongoing support to seniors currently in housing and dealing with landlords, management companies or housing authorities.  With limited housing inventory and prices soaring it has become critical that our senior population is experiencing Fairness, Security and Affordability.

Noreen will be here to listen, educate, and help seniors in understanding their tenant rights that will include the how-to of landlord communication including: complaints, lease explanations, letters to landlords and housing commissions to mention a few.

You will not be alone in working through your concerns…

So let’s take the fear away, go forward, and build strength through knowledge and partnership.

 

Time To Renew Membership!

Rose City Senior Center Membership ~ It’s Time to Renew!

Yearly Membership runs from July 1st – June 30th

Norwich Residents: Suggested $25.00 per year     Out-of-Town Membership: $40.00 per year 

Membership renewal is due now, regardless of when you originally signed up.

  1. You need to be a registered and up-to-date Member to take part in activities, classes or events and to utilize services we offer including transportation, hairdresser and Massage Therapy.
  2. Please fill out a Membership Application to update your renewal information. It is important for us to have your correct address, phone number, emergency contact, etc.
  3. Please use your SCAN CARD every time you visit the Senior Center. The statistics are vital for us to maintain what we offer by showing usage of our classes, programs and services.  If you don’t have a Scan Card or you are not sure how to use it, please stop by Reception for help.

Membership Applications can be picked up at the Reception Desk.

Farmer’s Market Cards

Will be distributed on:

Tues. June 11th,, Wed. June 12th, and Thurs. June 13th from 9:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m.

Farmer’s Market cards are available to low income seniors who meet certain eligibility requirements.

You must meet the following Eligibility Requirements in order to receive a benefit card:

¨ You must be 60 years or older.  If you are under 60 and disabled you must meet eligibility requirements and live in housing facilities occupied primarily by older individuals where congregate nutrition services are provided.

¨ Yearly income not to exceed $27,861 for single or $37,814 for couple.

¨ Must be participating in another need based program that verifies income eligibility such as Renter’s Rebate, Congregate Meal Program, Medicaid, SNAP (Foodstamps), etc.

¨ You must be a resident of the town you receive the benefit card from.

Limit of one card per eligible senior annually.

 

Bathroom Renovations Starting June 3rd

There will be handicap-accessible Porta-Potties available in our parking lot and hand washing stations set up during renovations.  Porta-Potties will be the only bathrooms available during this time.  Renovations on the bathrooms could take up to 4 weeks.

Rose City Senior Center will be operating as usual (or the best we can!).  We apologize for the inconvenience, but look forward to brand new bathrooms soon!

 

Wool Blanket Giveaway

Blankets, we’ve got blankets, we’ve got lots and lots of blankets and we’re
giving them away. Yes, the wool blankets have been in storage for a number of
years (emergency preparedness program supplies) and its time to repurpose
them. Actually, were trying to find Preston residents that would be interested in
accepting a wool blanket. They most likely will need a good cleaning when you
take them home too. If your interested in taking a green wool blanket, or two,
please leave your name and telephone number at the Senior Affairs Office 860-
887-5581 ext. 6. I will make arrangements to bring the blankets to the senior
center for pick-up. Remember, they are absolutely FREE and are waiting to keep
you warm and toasty.

June Blood Pressure Screenings

Uncas Health District Mobile Van will be at the Preston Senior Center on
Monday, June 10th from 12:45 – 1:45 p.m. No appointments are necessary and it is a first come first serve basis. We apologize for the cancellation of the May 13th screening as illness of Uncas staff caused the need to cancel. For future screenings, you are encouraged to contact the senior center, on clinic day, to verify the schedule. The telephone number is 860-889-0770. We look forward to seeing you on Monday, June 10th
