Air Quality Talk

Wednesday, April 24th at 11:00 a.m.

 

John Monahan from AERUS will be sharing information about air quality in your home.  AERUS is a company that provides home air and water purification systems.

John will be covering the three categories of home air pollution ~ Allergens & Particulates, Infectious Agents, and Toxic Compounds.  He will also be discussing  the possible negative health effects of these pollutants in your home.  Attendees will  be able to receive a FREE air quality inspection for your home (a $149.00 value).

Generations Family Health Center

Wednesday, April 24th from 11:45 a.m. – 12:45 p.m.

A community health worker from Generations Family Health Center will be at the Senior Center to discuss the health care services they offer.  Generations offers access to

Primary Care (Medical, Dental and Behavioral Health) and is currently accepting new patients of all ages.  Generations also offers assistance with insurance applications, a Sliding Fee Scale available, assistance with linkages to financial benefits, and can help you to afford your prescriptions.

Drop-in between 11:45 a.m. – 12:45 p.m. to discuss your heath care needs.  Appointment not needed.

Generations Family Health Center is located at 330 Washington Street, Norwich.

 

Trip: Wright’s Farm Restaurant & Wright’s Bakery

Thursday, April 18th

Enjoy a delicious, all you can eat, family-style chicken luncheon at Wright’s Farm Restaurant located in Harrisville, RI.  Your meal consists of dinner rolls with butter, fresh green salad with Wright’s Farm Classic Italian dressing, pasta with red sauce, Wright’s amazing French fries and of course Wright’s famous, tender roast chicken.  Included with your meal will be coffee or tea and ice cream for dessert!

Following lunch, a short ride brings you to Wright’s Dairy Farm & Bakery.  Wright’s Bakery specializes in a number of baked goods, including dessert cakes, cupcakes, cream pastries, flaky pastries, pies, bars, sweet rolls and buns, plenty of assorted cookies and much more!

Bus leaves Senior Center at 10:15am and returns approximately 4:00pm.

AARP Driver Safety- Smart Driver Course

Thursday, April 25th from 9:00am-1:00pm

(please arrive by 8:45am)

 

The AARP Smart Driver™ course, is a classroom based refresher course for drivers age 50 and older.  Auto insurance companies in most states provide a multi-year discount after showing proof of completing the course.  Consult your auto insurance company on discounts available to you.

Cost: $20 AARP Members (bring your AARP Card)  /  $25 AARP Non-Members

Pay directly to AARP by check or exact cash on the day of the class.

Trip: Art in Bloom, Museum of Fine Arts Boston

Friday, April 26th

Celebrate the return of spring at the Museum of Fine Arts Boston annual Art in Bloom event.

This popular festival of fine arts and fresh flowers incorporates more than 45 extraordinary floral arrangements inspired by works of art throughout the museums amazing galleries.  From ancient to contemporary, enjoy exquisite art from across the museum’s collections paired with magnificent floral interpretations created by New England area garden clubs and professional floral designers.

Established in 1870, the Museum of Fine Arts is home to approximately 500,000 pieces including paintings, drawings, sculpture, textiles, jewelry, photography, furniture and fashion.  The expansive

galleries include European, Asian, Egyptian, American, African and Contemporary art.

You will have time on your own to explore the museums many art galleries, be amazed at the beautiful floral arrangements and shop at the Museum gift stores and special Garden Cart for unique floral gifts and take-home flower arrangements.

COST: $58 per person  includes charter bus transportation and entrance fee to the Museum including the Art in Bloom event.  Lunch is on your own at the museum.  Driver tip is not included.

Pilates Instructor: Lisa Weir

Based on Joseph Pilates’ mat-work exercises, this Pilates class is designed to strengthen the core, abdominals, back, shoulders and hips with total mind & body core conditioning.

Carefully designed postures implement Joseph Pilates’ technique to improve strength, flexibility and muscle tone while using isometric resistance, rhythm and visualization techniques.  Pilates develops control and endurance in the whole human body.

This class is a floor based exercise class.  Bring a Yoga or Pilates mat with you. 

 

Housing Support Group

3rd Tuesday of every month from 10:00-11:00am

 

Noreen Zupnik, Housing Counselor from New London Homeless Hospitality Center – Housing Resource Center will be at Rose City Senior Center the 3rd Tuesday of every month to answer questions, listen to your concerns, and help with your complaints on your current housing situation.

The goal is to insure ongoing support to seniors currently in housing and dealing with landlords, management companies or housing authorities.  With limited housing inventory and prices soaring it has become critical that our senior population is experiencing Fairness, Security and Affordability.

Noreen will be here to listen, educate, and help seniors in understanding their tenant rights that will include the how-to of landlord communication including: complaints, lease explanations, letters to landlords and housing commissions to mention a few.

You will not be alone in working through your concerns…

So let’s take the fear away, go forward, and build strength through knowledge and partnership.

Fun Fact ~ Originally on Broadway, The Cemetery Club was made into a movie in 1993!

The Cemetery Club ~ Three Jewish widows meet once a month for tea before going to visit their husbands’ graves.  Ida is sweet-tempered and ready to begin a new life; Lucille is a feisty embodiment of “the girl who just wants to have fun”; and Doris is priggish and judgmental, particularly when Sam the butcher enters the scene.  Sam meets the widows while visiting his wife’s grave and when he has an eye for Ida, Doris and Lucille try to squash the budding romance!

COST: $99 per person includes charter coach bus transportation, fabulous buffet lunch, matinee performance of The Cemetery Club, and Cabaret Show.  Driver tip is not included.
