Medicare Choices Counselor, Lynn Wynn will be available to provide free information and assistance about current Medicare choices,  Medicare Supplement Insurance (Medigap), Medicaid, Long Term Care Insurance, Medicare Part D, and other related state and federal programs on Friday, November 6th & 20th, & December 4th from 9:00am-12:00pm.   FREE appointments are available, call (860)434-1605 ext. 240 to sign up.

Cellar Gang Performs at November Club Gathering

Join us on Tuesday, November 24th for our monthly Club gathering and enjoy a live performance by Cellar Gang 12:30 – 1:15 pm. Groton Senior Center offers quite a few social events often attached to meals that are offered to provide socialization and entertainment for  our community. Most of our events also have a hand chosen entertainer for you to enjoy.

This month we hope you make it here to watch this talented group of lady musicians who perform Wire-Strung Harp, Bowed Psalterys and an occasional Hammered Dulcimer. Their Wire-Strung Harps and Psalterys were built in Frank Murphy’s Cellar (thus their name).

GIFT SHOP—Open to the public, it is located in the Senior Center lobby. We offer a variety of gifts and cards for very reasonable prices. Local crafters have various items available as well as items that are made here at the Center.

COMPUTER ROOM—The Senior Center has a small computer room to allow you to play games, practice your skills, or use the Internet.

GREENHOUSE—The greenhouse grows and sells a variety of houseplants and occasionally vegetable plants. In the spring, summer, and fall there is an outdoor vegetable and flower garden. The greenhouse also offers many volunteer opportunities for those with a “green thumb.”

LIBRARY—Well stocked with current books and a setting for comfortable reading. The local newspapers are on hand as well.

COMPUTER ROOM—The Senior Center has a small computer room to allow you to play games, practice your skills, or use the Internet.

Watercolor Class

This 8 week course will be offered starting Monday, December 14th  from 9:30-11:30am.  This class will be taught by Sharon Schmiedel who has a BFA in painting from the Maryland Institute College of Art and spent many years working in technical illustration, medical illustration, and graphic design. This class is open to students of all levels. We will explore the basic watercolor techniques of working wet on wet, layering, and dry brush. The instructor will do demos and help students gain an understanding of how to use warm and cool colors, plus values to develop strong compositions. Once you learn the basics you can experiment and play with this medium to express your ideas with paint. The fee for this class will be $32.00 and will be due to the instructor at the first class.  This class is open to all members, but limited space is available.  A minimum of 7 students will be needed to run this class.

First Class must haves:

Bring what you have for: Paper, Watercolor paint, brushes, palette, masking tape, sketch pad, pencils, cup for water, paper towels.

If you don’t have any watercolor paint you can wait till after first class to purchase or buy the 3 tubes of paint listed below. If you don’t have a palette, bring in a white ceramic or plastic plate. You must bring in some brushes (the larger the better), paper, pencils and the other items listed above.

 

Free Hearing Clinic

Nancy Jablonski & Rene Vicedomini, Audiologist Concierge will be here for a free hearing clinic the second Wednesday of the month from 10am-1pm to provide free hearing testing, hearing aid checks, wax inspection, and listening demonstrations.  By appointment only, call (860)434-1605 ext. 240 to sign up.

 

Old Lyme Visiting Nurse

The nurse’s office is open Monday through Thursday from 11:15am – 1:15pm and Friday from 12:00-1:00pm here at the center.  No appointments are needed.  Our nurse would be happy to address any health questions or concerns as well as check your blood pressure.

 

Silver Sneakers Class

Join us Friday mornings at 10:30am and have some fun and move to the music through a variety of exercises designed to increase muscular strength, range of movement and activities for daily living. Hand-held weights, elastic tubing with handles and a Silver Sneakers ball are offered for resistance. A chair is available if needed for seated or standing support. This class will continue to be taught by Donna Scott, but participants will have the opportunity to register with her as a Silver Sneakers Member (accepted by most insurances) and participate in this class for free. If your insurance plan does not accept it, you can still come for the regular $4.00 a class rate. This class is a drop in class, no preregistration needed.
