Thursday, October 18th- Trip at an Autumn Harvest Lunch Train and Marble House Tour at Portsmouth & Newport, RI

Return to the golden age of rail travel on the Newport & Narragansett Bay Railroad. Join us for a special lunch excursion along Narragansett Bay during the Autumn harvest season.  Your amazing day starts with a fun Autumn Harvest Lunch Train ride where you will be dining in a “Pullman style” dining car.  You will enjoy a delicious autumn themed lunch (freshly prepared on board) as you take in the amazing scenery on your 2 hour long train ride.  The leisurely train travel takes you through the picturesque county side of Aquidneck Island with views of Narragansett Bay along your journey.   The train ride features all table seating on our private chartered train ride!

After our train excursion a short coach bus ride through Portsmouth into Newport will take us to the Vanderbilt’s  “Summer cottage” Marble House, one of the Newport mansions.  Here you will take a self-guided audio tour which allows you to view this amazing house and grounds at your own pace.  Marble House was built for Mr. & Mrs. William Vanderbilt (Cornelius Vanderbilt’s grandson) starting in 1888 and finished in 1892.  It cost the Vanderbilt’s $11 million to build the house, of which $7 million was spent on marble alone.  Upon completion of the house, Mr. Vanderbilt gave the house to his wife as a 39th birthday present.  In 2006,  Marble House was designated a National Historic Landmark.

Thank you Knitting Group!

The Rose City Senior Center Knitting and Crocheting group makes and donates afghans to ECHO at Backus Hospital to be distributed to cancer patients.  Recently the group received this thank you letter:

Dear Knitting Group,

I am a breast cancer patient who received a beautiful afghan last week at ECHO.  I am on an oral chemo pill which gave me 2 weeks of diarrhea.  I was at ECHO for hydrating IV’s 4 times in one week.  I received the afghan on my 2nd day and it warmed me up so well! It was made with blocks of various green squares.  Lovely!  At home I use it when I take naps and at bedtime at night.

Thank you for your talents and kind generosity.

Thank you Knitting Group for all that you do!

Don’t wait too long – Content by Judy

Do we wait too long?

To look….

At ourselves and see ourselves as we really are? Not as we still think we are.

Our housing and does it fit the life we will live in the future? Will we age well and safely where we are?

Our income? Do we have enough? Will the money last or will we outlive our savings?

Our own fragility? How will we manage and cope? When will we speak up and say I’m no longer safe on my own?

We have a tendency to wait too long to “live” as well. We say, “We’ll travel when we retire”, “We’ll downsize and move when we retire”, “Oh, I’ll figure that out after I retire”

Let’s revisit all of that. Let’s start planning today how we will live our lives to the fullest. Don’t put things off. Make modifications to your home as the years go by. Have most of it done before you retire. Start traveling as soon as the kids are independent and some of your money is freed up. Travel while you are healthy and able to. It’s a whole lot more fun to explore the world before you experience health issues.

Start now thinking about what you’ll do each day, all day once you are not working. You’ll have a lot of hours and days to fill up. Do you want to learn new skills? Watch your grandchildren? Volunteer and where will you volunteer? Find a new job? Start a new career?

Don’t wait too long. Life can pass us by. We can only wish once those days and years are behind us. Live life to the fullest and start that living right now!!
