August- Montville Senior Club News

The Senior Club will not be collecting dues for the 2021 calendar year. We will begin taking dues again for the 2022 year beginning in November.
We look forward to meetings starting up again in the Fall and seeing everyone back at the Center. 2022 dues will remain at the $10.00 annually.

We believe in what we do. We all have thought something like this in the past. We have all been very convinced on one issue or another. We then surround ourselves with likeminded people.

Together our voice grows stronger. Ideas flourish. Paths and networks expand. We can do all of this in a very serious way, over very serious issues but we can also do this with laughter and create a better world in a good way.

Laughing is a very healthy thing to do. Laughter is actually a physical reaction consisting usually of rhythmical, often contractions of the diaphragm and other parts of the respiratory system. It is a response to certain external or internal stimuli according to Wikipedia.

Did you know there is even a National Let’s Laugh Day? It’s March 19th and we can laugh about the fact that I missed it by a few months!

Life can be hard. Things happen to us and around us that we don’t understand. We can hit low spots. But we need to move forward. We need to look for what makes us smile. It could be a puppy, a baby, a joke, or a movie. But once we can smile it’s easier to laugh. So go watch a funny movie!

When you laugh it lowers your stress hormone. You can burn up to 40 calories with a good 15-minute belly laugh. Your abs get a workout.  Laughing can be better for you than a cup of coffee. One minute of laughter boosts your immune system for 24 hours. 15 minutes of laughing equals the benefits of 2 hours of sleep. So, here’s a question – if I’m awake during the night for a few hours I only need to laugh about it and I’m good???

The average man smiles an average of 8 times a day. The average woman smiles 62 times a day. Babies smile an average of 200 times a day. So, now lets all be babies!!! At least for part of the day.

I once attend a laughter yoga class and they tell you “Fake it till you make it!” If you force yourself to laugh and to keep laughing before you know it the laugh becomes real, and it feels good. Try it and you’ll have a better day!!

Montville Senior Citizens Club

Club Meeting is the first Friday of the Months at 10:00am.

Unless there is a Holiday then it is the following Friday.

Buck-A-Bowl Luncheon- Everyday, Monday – Friday from 11:00-12:15pm

Come and join us for our popular lunch program Monday – Friday, no need to sign up, just show up! Lunches are delicious, healthy portions, semi and homemade and great for our seniors on the go! Our Buck-a-Bowl Lunch Program is very successful, very popular! Sponsored by the Montville Senior Center, we offer a luncheon special Monday – Friday. Soups, stews, pasta, salad, sandwiches, and more! $1.00 donation request. No need to sign up. Lunch is 11:00- 12:15 or while supplies last! Come on down and have lunch with us! The Montville Senior Center is Food Safety Certified and Licensed by Uncas Health District.

Morning Coffee and Social- Every Morning, Monday – Friday

We will have our coffee & pastries (when available) for our seniors to come in and enjoy each morning. We KNOW this is one of the most missed parts of many of our seniors days! So come on back and enjoy socializing once again and have a coffee & pastries with us! Then stay for our Buck-A-Bowl Lunch Program too!

MASSAGE THERAPY- Tuesdays By Appointments Only

Massage Therapy offers many health benefits (relief from arthritis, circulation, aids in digestion, stress, depression, etc.)  Appointments are free to Montville seniors.  Sign up is first come, first serve – one appt per month per senior as the schedule fills up and we have a waiting list each month. Call Senior Center to make your appointment at 860-848-0422.  We do put a donation boxes out to help offset the costs.

We are Open! Here are the Updates!

The Montville Senior Center is once again open to all of our
Montville Seniors (60+) for programs, activities, and services. While not all of the
programs have started back up as yet, we do have many going and most importantly, our seniors are welcome to come in, visit, and socialize once again! We have
safety measures in place and ask everyone to abide by them. We have a registration
sign in at the front office for everyone entering the building. We ask that people are
respectful of others and maintain a proper social distance. If you are not vaccinated, we request that you wear a mask. We also ask that if you are not feeling well,
please stay home until feeling better.
I would like to give a BIG THANK YOU to my TEAM—I am very proud of my
staff and special volunteers! We have been extremely busy during the entire pandemic. We have provided services over the phone, out in the parking lot through
heat waves, freezing rain and snow, and at senior’s and client’s homes. We never
missed a day and provided many of our regular services along with new ones!
We are offering many of the activities and programs we have offered in the past,
along with some new ones coming up soon. We do have a few instructors who will
not be coming back to us, unfortunately, though we will look for instructors for
those programs.
We will hopefully be able to offer all of the programs and services we provide at the
Center via ZOOM as well! In an effort to ensure that our seniors who are homebound, whether temporary or permanently, have access to and receive the benefits
of participating in our classes—we are working on a program to provide them all at
home. Please stay tuned for more information on this…………
Lastly, welcome back everyone! I am so very happy to see everyone back in person, it has been way too long and we have missed you all so very much!

MedRIDE and MedRIDE II Program for Transportation

MedRIDE and MedRIDE II

The Town of Montville Department of Senior & Social Services has continued to offer MedRIDE, a FREE transportation for any/all medical appointments for our senior residents.  Safety measures are in place, masks must be worn.  Doctor appointments, hospital tests & screenings, therapy, pharmacies, dentists, etc.  Any medical related appointment.  Call Kathie or Ruthie @ 860-848-0422 for details and to schedule appointments.  This program is free for our Montville Seniors; a donation box is located on the van for contributions.  This program is supported by the Town of Montville and grant funds from the Senior Resources with Title III funds made available under the Older Americans Act.

 

MedRIDE II is the same type of medical transportation program though it is a joint effort between the Town of Montville and the City of Norwich. Grant Funds are provided by the State of Connecticut.  Driver is located out of the Montville Senior Center.  Do you need to go to Yale, New Haven, Hartford Hospital or Farmington to a specialist? Let us take you! Appointments need to be made by calling the Norwich Senior Center at 889-5960

HEALTH CLINIC

This program is still on hold, we will inform everyone when it resumes.  Health Clinic at the Senior Center is on Tuesdays from 9:00 – 11:00 a.m.  We have a visiting nurse come to the Center to perform blood pressure, blood sugar, and anemia screenings every week.  All services at the Clinic are FREE – donation box is available for contributions.  Call Kathie @ 848-0422 for details.

Stroke Awareness – Content by Judy

Yes, it is a true emergency!! If anyone, any age has sudden numbness in their face, arm, leg, especially on one side of the body. Sudden confusion, trouble speaking, or difficulty understanding speech. Sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes. Sudden trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance, lack of coordination. Sudden severe headache with no known cause. Call 911 right away!! This is a real emergency. If left unattended the consequences can be life altering if not fatal.

If you think someone might be having a stroke, act F.A.S.T.

F—Face: Ask the person to smile. Does one side of the face droop?

A—Arms: Ask the person to raise both arms. Does one arm drift downward?

S—Speech: Ask the person to repeat a simple phrase. Is the speech slurred or strange?

T—Time: If you see any of these signs, call 9-1-1 right away.

The sooner someone is treated the better the outcome. Strokes can be potentially reversed or at least stopped if a stroke is treated within the first 3 hours. Call an ambulance. Do not drive them!! The crew on the ambulance can start treatment sooner and the outcome will be better. You want life-saving treatment as soon as possible!!

If you think you are having a stroke call 911 right away. You might not be able to make that call even a few minutes later.

Every year over 800,000 people have a stoke. Nearly 150,000 die each year. Strokes are the leading cause of serious long-term disability. BUT 80% of strokes are PREVENTABLE!!

Most strokes are caused by clots blocking blood flow in the brain and strokes are a leading cause of disability. Some ways to prevent or lower your risk of having a stroke is to stop smoking, limit alcohol,  maintain a healthy weight, eat plenty of veggies and fruit, and exercise. Also be sure you are managing your diabetes, high blood pressure, cholesterol, and heart disease. Stress and depression can also contribute to the risk of a stroke.

By looking at your own risk factors  of having a stroke and living a healthier lifestyle you can help reduce the odds of having a stroke. Be sure to review all of this with your health care professionals. Check with them before taking or changing supplements to see if they are right for you. Get regular checkups. Reach out to other professionals for help to improve your lifestyle.

And it is never too late to change! Talk to your doctor and modify some things in your life!!
