SENIOR & DISABLED HOMEOWNERS’ TAX RELIEF

The State of Connecticut offers a state run Elderly Tax Benefit known as the Circuit Breaker. It is for

eligible real estate taxpayers with the Town of East Lyme. To apply, you must have reached the age of 65 prior to December 31, 2016 or be totally disabled if under the age of 65. You are applying for a credit on the taxes due on your primary residence in East Lyme. Under the law, Social Security income MUST be declared and the program requires you to provide information regarding all income received during 2016. The new income limit, INCLUDING Social Security, is:

$42,900 for married couples and $35,200 for single persons.

Additional Tax Relief for elderly and totally disabled homeowners. If eligible, the tax credit will range from $300 – $1,000 off the tax bill depending on the applicant’s income. The maximum 2016 income is $42,900 regardless of martial status.

Filing dates for the above programs are February 1, through May 15, 2017.

Applications available at the Assessor’s Office in the East Lyme Town Hall. There is also a Veteran’s Exemption that is available. For more information, contact the Assessor’s Office.

Additional Shopping Day

Lisbon Landing (Super Walmart) At the beginning of each month, (normally the 1st or 2nd Tuesday), we offer a shopping trip to Lisbon Landing. Each trip is limited to 9 people and shoppers are limited to a maximum of 4 bags (due to space constraints). The bus will get you to Lisbon for 10 AM and will pick you up at 12:30 p.m.  The bus will NOT be available to drop you off from store-to-store.  You will be dropped off and picked up in front of the Walmart Superstore. The bus departs the Senior Center at 9:30 a.m. Please call the Senior Center to reserve your seat.  If you need a ride into the Center, you must book a ride on the 8:30 bus as well. Shopping dates are subject to change.

TVCCA Home Heating Assistance Now Available

Winter is here and home heating costs can be a struggle for many.  There is help. TVCCA is now taking applications for the Connecticut Energy Assistance Program which provides assistance towards a homes primary source of heat.  Priority is given to “vulnerable households” with young children, elderly or disabled individuals. Income and Asset Limits apply: Household Size:  1  2 Asset Limits:  Homeowner  Renter Annual Income      $33,132     $43,327      $15,000  $10,000 Applications can be done over the phone and through the mail for homebound individuals. AARP Income Tax Assistance

If you wish to have your taxes done, please call the Senior Center starting January 3rd to schedule an appointment. This is a free-of-charge service through AARP. (860) 889-5960.  Call early, appointments go quickly!

Home Repair Loans still available

Some Montville low and moderate income homeowners who want to make home repairs still have a few months to apply! You must have at least 10% equity in your home and be up to date with your town taxes. This grant is aimed at upgrades like roof replacement, heating systems, window replacements, handicap ramps, bathroom adaptions, electrical and other code updates. Applicants annual income must be less than $46,100 for individuals and $52,650 for two. For more information and applications call the Montville Town Clerk or Lisa Low and Associates at 203-888-5624
