AARP Driver Safety- Smart Driver Course

The AARP Smart Driver™ course, is a classroom based refresher course for drivers age 50 and older.  Auto insurance companies in most states provide a multi-year discount after showing proof of completing the course.  Consult your auto insurance company on discounts available to you.

Cost: $20 AARP Members (bring your AARP Card)      $25 AARP Non-Members

Pay directly to AARP by check or exact cash on the day of the class.

Lottie Scott Books for Sale

We are selling Lottie Scott’s two books, Deep South – Deep North: A Family’s Journey and Waiting for KittyBooks are priced at $15 each and can be purchased at Reception.

Deep South – Deep North: A Family’s Journey is Lottie and her family’s story of growing up in racially-charged and impoverished South Carolina.  Under the cloud of racial discrimination, difficult farm working conditions, and family tensions, Lottie describes the unbreakable bonds of love that eventually emerged to forever bind her family members together.

Waiting for Kitty is a children’s book.  The book recalls stories from Lottie’s childhood growing up in Longtown, South Carolina.  Waiting for Kitty can be use by parents to help talk to their children about racism and develop understanding about growing up in a different culture.

Boston Red Sox vs. Tampa Bay Rays

Sunday, June 4th

Bus leaves promptly at 8:45 AM.  Return time approx. 8:00 PM.

Enjoy a great afternoon watching the Boston Red Sox play the Tampa Bay Rays at Historic Fenway Park.  Great seat location on the third base side in Grandstand section 31.  These seats are located under an overhang (so no sitting in the sun) and have an great view of the action on the field!

Our coach bus will drop us off and pick us up next to Fenway Park.  You will have time on your own for lunch before the gates open.  Game time 1:35p.m.

COST: $105 per person includes charter bus transportation and game ticket*.

*Red Sox tickets will only be distributed via mobile tickets in the ballpark app.  No paper tickets given.

Red Sox Game Cancellation Policy: Refund will only be given if your spot is filled. 

This includes cancellations due to game time change or rescheduled game due to weather.

 

Boston on Your Own

A great opportunity to visit Boston for some fantastic sightseeing, fun shopping and wonderful restaurants or buy your own Red Sox tickets and ride to Fenway Park with us!

Your drop off and pickup location will be next to Fenway Park.  There are multiple sites to visit within walking distance or take a “T” (Boston Subway) and explore farther.  Please plan your own trip and locations to visit before you arrive.  We will be leaving Boston approx. 5:15 p.m. (after game ends).

COST: $40 per person includes transportation.

Register for Trip to Ivoryton Playhouse Trip for “On Golden Pond”

First, enjoy a delicious lunch at Lenny & Joe’s Fish Tail (lunch on your own).  Following lunch, a short ride will bring you to the beautiful Ivoryton Playhouse for the delightful play On Golden Pond.

Built in 1911 this historic summer theater has hosted some of the great names of the American stage including Katharine Hepburn, Marlon Brando, Betty Grable, and Tallulah Bankhead.

On Golden Pond is the love story of Ethel and Norman Thayer, who are returning to their summer home on Golden Pond.  They are visited by their divorced, middle-aged daughter Chelsea and her dentist fiancé who are leaving for a trip to Europe.  Ethel and Norman agree to care for Billy, the teenage son of Chelsea’s fiancé, and a most unexpected relationship blooms.  A heartwarming and hilarious show about generations of a family learning to communicate and to care.

Start with a delicious, all you can eat, buffet lunch featuring a large selection with all foods freshly prepared onsite.  After lunch, enjoy the hilarious performance of Run For Your Wife.  Following the show, return to your seat in the dining room for dessert, drinks and a fun-filled Cabaret Show!

A taxi driver gets away with having two wives in different areas because of his irregular work schedule.  Complication is piled upon complication as the cabby tries to juggle both wives and keep his double life from exploding.  It doesn’t quite work and that means lots of laughs for us!

COST: $94 per person includes charter coach bus transportation, fabulous buffet lunch, matinee performance of “Run For Your Wife”, and Cabaret Show.  Driver tip is not included.

Dementia & Caregiving Series

Mondays in April from 1:00 p.m. – 2:30 p.m.

 

Join us for this free 4-week series presented by Kristine Johnson, Dementia Specialist from Hartford Healthcare Center for Healthy Aging.  Are you caring for someone with dementia?  Do you want to learn more about the progression of the disease and helpful communication tips?  Would you like to be able to recognize common behaviors and know how to respond?

April  3rd – Overview of Dementia

April 10th – Basics of Communication and Understanding Behaviors

April 17th – Safety and How to Structure Daily Activities

April  24th – Taking Care of the Caregiver and Care Options

Participants are encouraged to attend all 4 sessions but it is not required.  A question and answer period will be included each week.  Community Recourses available to you will be discussed.

Bus leaves Senior Center at 10:15am and returns approximately 4:00pm. 

 

Enjoy a delicious, all you can eat, family-style chicken luncheon at Wright’s Farm Restaurant located in Harrisville, RI.  Your meal consists of dinner rolls with butter, fresh green salad with Wright’s Farm Classic Italian dressing, pasta with red sauce, Wright’s amazing French fries and of course Wright’s famous, tender roast chicken.  Included with your meal will be coffee or tea and ice cream for dessert!

Following lunch, a short ride brings you to Wright’s Dairy Farm & Bakery.  Wright’s Bakery specializes in a number of baked goods, including dessert cakes, cupcakes, cream pastries, flaky pastries, pies, bars, sweet rolls and buns, plenty of assorted cookies and much more!

Scams Targeting Older Adults Presentation

Michelle Bourdeau, Educational Foundation Director of the Better Business Bureau® Foundation of CT, will be here to discuss steps you can take to protect yourself from scams and fraud that tend to target older adults.  Unfortunately, we live in a world where deceptive measures through scams and fraud are so prevalent, it is necessary to be armed with information, tips and pointers.  Be prepared and don’t become a victim!
