Programs

Programs – The Senior Center plans events on a monthly basis. Below is a listing for what generally occurs. For more details on events not listed below, check the Calendar Section and/or the News Section.

Fitness – Participants can trial any class without obligation. Please notify the Senior Center office if you are trialing a class.

All participants are encouraged to participate at their level of fitness/comfort. Any physical concerns are to be addressed to your personal physician. Questions about modifying the routines are to be directed to your instructor. All instructors are CPR certified and qualified in the class they are teaching.

Classes are Session Based: These classes will have a specific start and end date. Class sessions typically run for 3 months.

Music Classes – Ukulele and Guitar lessons. Explore your creative side and challenge yourself mentally by learning to play an instrument. Beginner level is offered as well as more advanced classes. Loaner instrument is available if needed.

Education/Enrichment Classes – Learn new skills in the areas of the arts, technology, health and more. Through education develop and help maintain your mental abilities as well as enhance your self-esteem and creative needs. Explore and develop your interests.

Cards/GamesA variety of choices for group play and individual play. Promotes mental stimulation and provides for socialization. They stimulate memory, attention skills and have great social interaction which works on many parts of the brain. Our games programs include a variety of levels from basic to more challenging options.

Social Scene – The Senior Center plans, often with meals, events that are offered to provide socialization and entertainment. Any excuse for a party is considered whether it be to celebrate a national holiday or just to have some fun.

Health Services – These services are provided to help older adults age at home and stay as well as possible. Everyone is encouraged to take advantage of the programs.

Nutrition Services – The Senior Nutrition Program, administered by TVCCA, offers nutritious meals on Tuesday and Thursday at 11:45am. You must register for a lunch at least 24 hours in advance.

    New session will start on May 4th and end on June 29th and will be held the 2nd and 4th Tue of every month at 10:30am via Zoom only at this time. Registration begins May 3rd.

     

    Tue May 11th and Tue May 25th                    1-2pm                                                              Craft Time

    2 classes – May 11th creating a Flower Wreath & May 25th painting Kindness Rocks. In person instruction with Candy. Registration begins May 3rd.

     

    Wed thru June 30th                                         9:30-11:30am                                                    Stitch Happens

    New session will start on May 5th and end on June 30th and will be held on Wed at 9:30am in person. You must register your interest in this session. Maximum number indoors will be 8. Registration begins May 3rd.

     

    Thu thru June 24th                                            10:00-11:30am                                                 Drawing Class

    New session will start on May 6th and end on June 24th and will be held on Thu at 10am in person but will have a Zoom option. You must register for this session. Maximum number indoors will be 16. Registration begins May 3rd.

     

    Thru June 25th                                                                                                                                      Quilting

    New session  will start on May  3rd and end on June 29th and will be held on the 1st Mon of the month at 1pm – the 3rd Fri of the month at 5pm and the last Tue of the month at 5pm. You must register for this session. This is an indoor program. Maximum number indoors will be 8. Fee is $2per participation.

    New session will start May 3rd and end on June 28th (no class on May 31st). Senior Fitness offered on Mon at 10am via Zoom only at this time. You must register for this session before May 3rd. Class fee $14R and $16NR.

     

    Mon and Wed thru June 30th                     11:30-12:30pm                           Strength Training

    New session will start on May 5th and end on June 30th. Mon class in person/Wed class via Zoom. (no class on May 3rd & May 31st, Zoom only May 5th, 10th, 12th ). You must register for this session. Maximum number indoors will be 20. Registration in process. Zoom option for both classes available. Class fee $40R and $44NR.

     

    Tue thru June 29th                                            7-9pm                                             Recreational Pickleball

    New session will start on May 4th and end on June 29th. In person play. Must register your interest to play for the session and then register weekly for the next upcoming date of play. Maximum number indoors will be 16. Registration begins May 3rd. $3per play.

     

    Tue and Thu thru June 29th                                  9-10am                                                Yoga

    New session will start on May 4th and end on June 29th. In person instruction or Zoom option available.       Maximum number indoors will be 20. Registration in process. Class fee $34R and $38NR.

     

    Tues and Thu thru June 29th                                 3-4ppm                                                   FitDance Gold

    New Session started April 20th and ends on June 29th. FitDance Gold offered on Tues & Thu at 3pm in person. Class will run indoors but will have a Zoom option. Maximum number indoors will be 20. You must register for this session. Registration in process. Class fee $58R and $62NR.

     

    Wed and Fri thru June 30th                                 9-10am                                                             Tai Chi

    New Session will start on May 4th and end on June 30th (No class on Wed, May 26th and Fri, May 28th). Tai Chi offered on Wed and Fri at 9am in person. Class will run indoors but will have a Zoom option. Maximum number indoors will be 15. You must register for this session. Registration begins May 3rd. Class fee $30R and $34NR.

     

    Wed thru June 30th                                                  10:15-12pm                                                  Ping Pong

    New Session will start on May 5th and end on June 30th. In person program. You must register your interest in this session. Maximum number indoors will be 10. Registration begins May 3rd.

     

    Fri thru June 25th                                                        10:15-11:15am                                           Chair Yoga

    New session will start on May 7th and ends June 25th and will be held on Fri at 10am in person but will have a Zoom option. Maximum number indoors will be 15. You must register for this session. Registration begins on May 3rd. Class fee $12R and $14NR.

     

    Fri thru June 25th                                                        10-12pm                                                           Novice/advanced Pickleball/Drills & Coached play

    New session will start on May 7th and end on June 25th. In person play. Must register your interest to play for the session and then register weekly for the next upcoming date of play. Maximum number indoors will be 16. Registration begins May 3rd. $3per play.

    New session will start on May 8th and end on June 26th. In person play. Must register your interest to play for the session and then register weekly for the next upcoming date of play. Maximum number indoors will be 16. Registration begins May 3rd. $3per play.

    SENIOR & DISABLED HOMEOWNERS’ TAX RELIEF 2021 ***Deadline May 15***

    The State of Connecticut offers a state run Elderly Tax Benefit known as the Circuit Breaker. It is for eligible real estate taxpayers within the Town of East Lyme. To apply, you must have reached the age of 65 prior to December 31, 2020 or be totally disabled if under the age of 65. You are applying for a credit on the taxes due on your primary residence in East Lyme. Under the law, Social Security income MUST be declared and the program requires you to provide information regarding all GROSS income received during 2020.

    The new income limit, including GROSS income and Social Security:

    $45,800 for married couples and

    $37,600 for single persons.

                            LOCAL TAX CREDIT OPTION:

    Also, the Town of East Lyme provides on Additional Tax Relief for elderly and totally disabled homeowners. The new income limit, including GROSS income and Social Security is

    $45,800 regardless of marital status.  For further information, contact the Assessor’s Office at the Town Hall.

     

    Filing dates for the above programs are February 1, through May 15, 2021.

    Please note, due to COVID-19 restrictions, if you are already on the program, you do not need to re-apply this year. You will be automatically renewed and will not have to reapply until 2023. Anyone new will need to contact the Assessor’s Office to an appointment and you will be met outside.

    The Town Hall is currently closed to the public.  There is also a Veteran’s Exemption that is available. For more information, contact the Assessor’s Office.

     

     

    90+ CELEBRATION ALL MONTH!! We need your help!

    We had to cancel last year’s 90+ Tea and we can’t really host a Tea this year BUT we do not want to forget our citizens who have made it to 90 and older. Contact the Senior Center if you know someone who is 90+.

    We are planning at home visits this year to drop off a Celebrate 90+ gift to all of our nonagenarians.
