The Food Distribution date has been changed by UCFS for the month of
September. Previously advertised as being conducted on Friday, September 9th, it
is now changed to the first Friday in September which is the 2nd.

iPHONE PHOTOGRAPHY 3-PART WORKSHOP SERIES & EVENT

All workshops are taught by local photographer, Fred Verillo.

Free for members ($10 each for non-members

 

September 7th 10:00am-Learn the Basics if iPhone photography such as composition
and subject matter as well as things like perspective & framing. Discuss techniques such as
reflections, patterns, light, and shadow to create interesting and unique images.

October 5th 10:00am- Hands-on workshop where you will learn how to use all the apps
available on our iPhone to edit our favorite images. Also learn how to use online
photo developing services such as Walgreen’s photo services or Mpix to quickly and inexpensively make photos.

November 2nd 10:00am- Hands-on workshop to learn how to inexpensively mat and
frame our best and favorite images so that they are ready to hang or give as a gift.
November 30th 10:00am- Hang Photography Exhibit at the OL Town Hall

December 2nd from 4:30PM- 6:00PM Opening Reception to be held at the Old Lyme
Town Hall. Family, friends, community members, and senior center members welcome!

December 1-30th-“Take Your Best Shot Camera Club” will be exhibiting their framed photographs at Old Lyme Town Hall.

AARP Prescription Discounts

AARP has partnered with Optum Rx to help members save on FDA-approved medications. If you are already an AARP member, the discount is immediately available. If you are not an AARP member, contact Optum Rx at 1-877-422-7718.

When you go to your pharmacy, show the pharmacist your AARP membership card and ask what the amount of the prescription discount would be. You can either pay with the prescription discount OR with your Part D card but you cannot use both together. Also, if you have a deductible with your Part D card or are in the coverage gap with your Part
D card, this expenditure will not count towards either.

Hikers from other towns are welcome to participate. Medium hikes may have a few hills, rocks or beach sand. The difficult hike is more strenuous; participants must have completed two medium hikes.

All hikes are approximately three to four miles long, and will begin at 9:30 A.M.   *Senior Van – $5.00 fee limited occupancy. Hikers who wish to carpool should meet at East Lyme Senior Center at 9:00 A.M.

Distances, locations and leaders are subject to change, if necessary.   All hikers must register for each hike by calling the East Lyme Senior Center – 860-739-5859.

Hikers are to bring water and sturdy shoes; and lunch, insect repellant and sunscreen if desired.

Senior Center Fun Trip: La Luna & Lighthouse Cruise

Lunch at La Luna in New London then Lights & Sights Lighthouse Cruise

(Different cruise Itinerary from August trip– preference will be given to Members who were unable to attend in Aug)

 

$35 Per Person *cash* payable in advance.

 

Lunch on own at La Luna. Departure time is 11:00am and expected return is 4:30pm. The cruise fee is $35.00, but if we can get 20 people to register (some will have to drive and meet us there), we can get 25% reduction off the ticket price.

AARP Mature Driver Safety Class

Wednesday, September 7th from 12:30-4:30pm

 

$20 for AARP member, $25 for non-members
Register with the Senior Center office. Payment due upon registration.

The AARP Smart Driver course is the nation’s first refresher course specifically designed for drivers age 50 and older. In many states, drivers may benefit from a discount on their auto insurance premium upon completing the course. Contact your insurance company to find out. And you will learn something new along the way. In fact, an evaluation of the course found that 97% of participants changed at least one driving habit as a result of what they learned.

Bring your lawn chair/blanket and listen or dance to the Corvettes Doo Wop Review. Food Trucks will be available to bring a picnic dinner and enjoy the night air and your fellow do wop enthusiasts. Event to be held at Thrive 55+ powered by the Groton Senior Center @ 102 Newtown Road, Groton.

$10 per person – limited tickets available. Get your ticket at the Senior Center
office. A bus will be provided if we have enough registration.

Smith Acres Succulent Workshop

Tuesday, September 20th at 9:30am

 

Come join one of Smith’s Acres “Veggie Girls” and create a cute succulent dish garden.. These easy to care for plants love to hang out on a sunny windowsill or table. We will have lots of different varieties of succulents to choose from.

All supplies included.

Cost is $10 per person.
