    SENIOR & DISABLED HOMEOWNERS’ TAX RELIEF

    The State of Connecticut offers a state run Elderly Tax Benefit known as the Circuit Breaker. It is for

    eligible real estate taxpayers with the Town of East Lyme. To apply, you must have reached the age of 65 prior to December 31, 2016 or be totally disabled if under the age of 65. You are applying for a credit on the taxes due on your primary residence in East Lyme. Under the law, Social Security income MUST be declared and the program requires you to provide information regarding all income received during 2016. The new income limit, INCLUDING Social Security, is:

    $42,900 for married couples and $35,200 for single persons.

    LOCAL TAX CREDIT OPTION: Also, the Town of East Lyme provides on

    Additional Tax Relief for elderly and totally disabled homeowners. If eligible, the tax credit will range from $300 – $1,000 off the tax bill depending on the applicant’s income. The maximum 2016 income is $42,900 regardless of martial status.

    Filing dates for the above programs are February 1, through May 15, 2017.

    Applications available at the Assessor’s Office in the East Lyme Town Hall. There is also a Veteran’s Exemption that is available. For more information, contact the Assessor’s Office.

     

    AARP SPONSORED MATURE DRIVER SAFETY CLASS

    This course reviews and reinforces safe driving skills. No driving test and no written test. Contact your automobile insurance company regarding a potential discount with completion of the course.

    MEDICATION TAKE BACK DAY

    If you have expired, unused or unwanted medications in your household, here is your opportunity to dispose of them easily and safely. Saturday, April 30th from 10am to 2pm, the East Lyme Police Department will accept your medications for disposal for free and no questions asked.

    AARP TAX-AIDE PROGRAM

    AARP TAX-AIDE PROGRAM

    The AARP Tax-Aide program provides free tax counseling and preparation for  middle to low-income taxpayers with special attention to those people aged 60 and over. The Tax Advisors are available for the months of March and April on Monday and Friday mornings at 9am. Appointments must be made by calling the Senior Center and the slots are filling up. Taxpayers are asked to provide their:

    1. Personal Identification and Social Security Number,
    2. Copies of your 2014 Federal and CT tax returns, and
    3. All 2015 income reports that have been received (SSA-1099 forms, all 1099 forms, W-2 forms, Unemployment Compensation Forms), and all other Forms that indicate Federal and/or CT income taxes paid in 2015, and
    4. Any documentation showing original cost of sold assets in 2015.

     

    NURSE MANAGED FOOT CLINIC

    2nd Wed of every month from 1:00pm to 3:00pm

    A nurse from the Visiting Nurses Association of Southeastern Connecticut (VNA of SECT) is available for routine foot care. Appointments are required. The fee is $10pp.

    Anyone with a Diabetic diagnosis cannot be seen by this clinic but all others are welcome.
