Programs

Programs – The Senior Center plans events on a monthly basis. Below is a listing for what generally occurs. For more details on events not listed below, check the Calendar Section and/or the News Section.

Fitness – Participants can trial any class without obligation. Please notify the Senior Center office if you are trialing a class.

All participants are encouraged to participate at their level of fitness/comfort. Any physical concerns are to be addressed to your personal physician. Questions about modifying the routines are to be directed to your instructor. All instructors are CPR certified and qualified in the class they are teaching.

Classes are Session Based: These classes will have a specific start and end date. Class sessions typically run for 3 months.

Music Classes – Ukulele and Guitar lessons. Explore your creative side and challenge yourself mentally by learning to play an instrument. Beginner level is offered as well as more advanced classes. Loaner instrument is available if needed.

Education/Enrichment Classes – Learn new skills in the areas of the arts, technology, health and more. Through education develop and help maintain your mental abilities as well as enhance your self-esteem and creative needs. Explore and develop your interests.

Cards/GamesA variety of choices for group play and individual play. Promotes mental stimulation and provides for socialization. They stimulate memory, attention skills and have great social interaction which works on many parts of the brain. Our games programs include a variety of levels from basic to more challenging options.

Social Scene – The Senior Center plans, often with meals, events that are offered to provide socialization and entertainment. Any excuse for a party is considered whether it be to celebrate a national holiday or just to have some fun.

Health Services – These services are provided to help older adults age at home and stay as well as possible. Everyone is encouraged to take advantage of the programs.

Nutrition Services – The Senior Nutrition Program, administered by TVCCA, offers nutritious meals on Tuesday and Thursday at 11:45am. You must register for a lunch at least 24 hours in advance.

    New session started May 3rd and ends on June 28th. Senior Fitness offered on Mon at 10am via Zoom only at this time. You must register for this session. Registration in process. Class fee $14R and $16NR.

     

    Mon and Wed thru June 30th                        11:30-12:30pm                     Strength Training

    New session started on May 5th and ends on June 30th. Mon class in person/Wed class via Zoom.  You must register for this session. Maximum number indoors will be 20. Registration in process. Zoom option for both classes available. Class fee $40R and $44NR.

     

    Tue thru June 29th                                           7-9pm                                           Recreational Pickleball

    New session started on May 4th and ends on June 29th. In person play. Must register your interest to play for the session and then register weekly for the next upcoming date of play. Maximum number indoors will be 16. Registration in process. $3per play.

     

    Tue and Thu thru June 29th                           9-10am                                                    Yoga

    New session started on May 4th and ends on June 29th. In person instruction or Zoom option available.       Maximum number indoors will be 20. You must register for this session. Registration in process. Class fee $34R and $38NR.

     

    Tues and Thu thru June 29th                         3-4ppm                                        FitDance Gold

    New Session started April 20th and ends on June 29th. FitDance Gold offered on Tues & Thu at 3pm in person. Class will run indoors but will have a Zoom option. Maximum number indoors will be 20. You must register for this session. Registration in process. Class fee $58R and $62NR.

     

    Wed and Fri thru June 30th                       9-10am                                                   Tai Chi

    New Session started on May 4th and ends on June 30th. Tai Chi offered on Wed and Fri at 9am in person. Class will run indoors but will have a Zoom option. Maximum number indoors will be 15. You must register for this session. Registration in process.  Class fee $30R and $34NR.

    New session started on May 7th and ends June 25th and will be held on Fri at 10am in person but will have a Zoom option. Maximum number indoors will be 15. You must register for this session. Registration in process. Class fee $12R and $14NR.

     

    Fri thru June 25th                                      10-12pm                                                  Novice/advanced Pickleball/Drills & Coached play

    New session started on May 7th and ends on June 25th. In person play. Must register your interest to play for the session and then register weekly for the next upcoming date of play. Maximum number indoors will be 8 a minimum of 4 is required to run this session. Registration in process. $3per play.

    New session started on May 8th and ends on June 26th. In person play. Must register your interest to play for the session and then register weekly for the next upcoming date of play. Maximum number indoors will be 16. Registration in process. $3per play.

    Thurs, June 3rd at 6pm- Hartford Healthcare presents a Webinar: Virtual Healthy Brain Series

    In this free, LIVE webinar series, join Hartford HealthCare Center for Healthy Aging Dementia
    Specialist, to learn how to challenge your mind daily, importance of diet, sleep and the blue
    zones. Q&A with the expert will follow the presentation.

    virtual class.

    June 21st from 2:00pm to 4:00pm- National Make Music Day

    We, a group of acoustic guitarists who regularly play together, invite
    other guitarists, musicians and singers to join us for a 2-hour play
    along session outside the East Lyme Community Center.

    All are welcome. Old and young. Just bring a chair, your new or dusty
    acoustic or percussion instrument, and or voices.

    ENERGY ASSISTANCE FOR 20/21 FALL&WINTER SEASON ***NOTE NEW DEADLINES***

    Applications for the Connecticut Energy Assistance Program are being taken at the New London office of TVCCA. This year, due to the COVID pandemic, phone applications will be processed by TVCCA. In order to set up a phone appointment with TVCCA, you will need to call 860-425-6681. They will provide you with further details.

    The Senior Center will assist the Senior and Disabled population of East Lyme with their applications. Please call the Senior Center at 860-739-5859 for instructions on how your application will be processed. For residents who reside in Twin Haven and the AHEPA housing complexes, letters will be sent to you with your instructions.

    To be eligible:

    1. In a one-person household, income can be NO greater than $36,645. In a two-person household, income can be NO greater than $49,228.
    2. If you are a renter, the first $12,000.00 in liquid assets is disregarded. Any amount over that limit, when added to the annual gross income must be below the income guidelines.
    3. If you are a homeowner, the first $15,000.00 in liquid assets is disregarded. Any amount over that limit, when added to the annual gross income must be below the income guidelines.

     

    The following information is required:

    1. Proof of income sources: copy of most recent monthly (quarterly, annual) check or copy of an award letter or copy of most recent bank statement showing the direct deposit. If you are employed you must provide a copy of your four most recent consecutive pay stubs.
    2. Dividends, annuities or interest income (has to be more than $10/month). Copy of a statement for the most recently completed period.
    3. Proof of what you pay for rent. In addition, the name, address and telephone number of your landlord is required. If you are a homeowner and pay a mortgage, you must provide proof of your mortgage payment.
    4. If you have a checking and/or savings account, you must bring in the most recent ENTIRE statement.
    5. If natural gas or electricity heats the household, bring in the most recent ENTIRE statement.

     

    Please remember all members of the household who receive income must report their income.
