    Help Make Miracles This Holiday Season St. Vincent de Paul Place Donation

    Let’s join together, open our hearts, and help those in need this holiday season.  The Rose City Senior Center will be collecting items to donate to the St. Vincent de Paul Place in Norwich.  St. Vincent de Paul Place is a community meal site and food pantry that strives to meet the needs of individuals and families who are struggling financially in the Norwich area.  Let’s help them out!

    Items that are needed: soup, canned vegetables, pasta sauce, pasta, canned fruit, tuna, jelly, peanut butter, beans, coffee, sugar, oatmeal, soap, deodorant, razors, shampoo, conditioner, toothpaste, toothbrushes, shaving cream, winter hats, winter gloves, socks, toilet paper, paper towels, dog food and cat food.  Monetary donations and gift cards to Stop & Shop, ShopRite, Big Y, Walmart and Target are also appreciated.

    *Please be sure all items are canned or in plastic containersNO fresh, refrigerated or frozen items.  Also, items must be new, in unopened containers and not expired.*

    If you would like to make a donation, please drop items off at Reception no later than

    Friday, December 14th so we can get the items to St. Vincent de Paul Place!

    Free Stuff and Discounts – Content by Judy

    Don’t we all want something for nothing? Do you look for the bargains and ways to stretch every dollar? I’m drawn to the clearance signs like a bee to honey! So, I’ve come up with this list of discounts and free stuff for seniors, veterans and everyone else. And remember if you don’t ask you miss out.

    1. Look on Craigslist. They have a “free” listing under “for sale”.
    2. Facebook has any number of resale/yard sale pages.
    3. Free Hunting and fishing licenses if you are 65+.
    4. State parks + CT registration = free entrance. This is now included in our car registrations.
    5. Some Banks offer free checking and more.
    6. Free college tuition if you are 62+. Finish your degree. Take classes that interest you.
    7. Income tax returns – free with AARP trained preparers- check local senior centers for appt.
    8. Save 5-10% off your auto ins for taking a driving class – check senior center for AARP class.
    9. Retention dept for utilities – reduction for staying with that provider. This will take some time – maybe a half hour – but the discount will last 12-24 months.
    10. Prescription assistance for non-covered unaffordable meds – ask at your doctor’s office and ask your pharmacist.
    11. Legal assistance is available from several resources. Call 1-800-296-1467 or 1-800-453-3320 to get started.
    12. Your library – free and reduced passes to museums and attractions, e-books, e-audio.
    13. Discounts at restaurants and stores – one example is Kohl’s 15% every Wed for those 60+.
    14. Community Resources – Call or visit your Area Agency on Aging, Senior Centers or your Town’s Municipal Agent.
    15. Call your Town Hall. Town Clerks are a wealth of information.

    Tuesday, November 20th- Long Term Care Planning and Transfer of Asset Rules for Title XIX (19)

    Time: 10:00am

    Title XIX (19) – Medicaid is designed to assist in paying for Skilled Nursing Facility expenses and many other medical expenses for individuals who have minimal assets and inadequate income to pay for these needs.

    Long term care planning is complicated, but there are many ways to transfer assets to your heirs and still be eligible for Title XIX if and when the time comes. The best thing you can do to provide for your own needs and still have a legacy is to plan ahead…which means it would be wise to start your planning now.

    Wednesday, November 14th- Know the 10 Warning Signs of Alzheimer’s Disease

    Join us for this informative presentation on the 10 early warning signs of Alzheimer’s.  Alzheimer’s is a disease that causes slow decline in memory, thinking and reasoning skills. This presentation will help differentiate between normal age related forgetfulness and Alzheimer’s disease indicators. This talk is recommended for anyone who is interested

    in learning more about the early detection of Alzheimer’s and related dementias; and will give you a better understanding of those suffering from this disease.
